Locksmith Services: 3 Ways to Enhance Security When Moving to a New Place

When moving to a new home, your home may not be as safe as you think. Most locksmiths recommend implementing the following three tips and tricks to further secure your home against burglaries and break-ins.

Change the Locks

You've just been handed the keys to your new home. Ideally, only you have a copy of the key; however, you cannot be sure. Previous tenants may have made copies of the key, given them to friends or relatives and forgotten to return them at the end of their tenancy. The bottom line is that you don't know whether there are other copies of the key out there.

The best solution is to change the locks completely. Most locksmiths recommend getting grade 1 or grade 2 deadbolts as they are resistant to twisting, prying and other lock picking attempts. After changing the locks, you are required to provide a copy of the new keys to your landlord. Depending on the regulations of your city, you may have to inform your landlord ahead of time that you are going to change the locks.

Invest in Lights and Surveillance Cameras at Key Entrances

Motion-activated bright lights and surveillance cameras often deter criminals from targeting your home, as these security enhancements may capture criminals in the midst of participating in criminal activities. Most homes do not have these security features installed yet, and they are definitely a worthwhile investment.

Bright lights will not only deter criminals, but will also make your walk to the back and front entrances a lot safer. Your pathway will be illuminated, and you are less likely to become a victim of slip and fall accidents or mugging.

Reinforce Sliding Windows with Locks

Criminals are more likely to target sliding windows and doors of homes, as they are less secure. Sliding windows and doors rely on latches and not locks, which mean that they are vulnerable to being pulled off of their frames.

Install anti-lift security devices, such as Charley bars. You can also insert items onto the track to limit how much sliding doors and windows can be opened. This prevents criminals from being able to open the sliding doors and windows from the outside, especially if the windows and doors are not particularly secure.

When moving to a new home, it is crucial that you reinforce all of the existing security features that are present and also install additional enhancements for she sake of your own security. Many professional locksmiths like High Security Locksmiths can help you determine which enhancements are most suitable for your home by doing a quick walkthrough.
